Are Bio Fuels hurting the environment?

Many have said that bio fuels are a safe clean future for renewable energy. I have posted before about the ineffiecny of ethanol, which may cost more in gas than it replaces. Now, new evidence that bio fuels are not good for the envirionment. Specifically, the rise in demand for soy and palm oils for bio fuels has fueled distruction of rain forests. Think about it, if suddenly, the world needs vast new fields for growing our energy, it doesn't just come out of nowwhere. Biofuels are also usually subsidized by governemts, evidence that it isn't efficient enough on it's own.. but now, it seems that governments are subsidizing the distruction of the rain forests. Very bad indeed. I believe that the future of autos is in smaller, rechargeable (plugin) hybrid cars. The power for these could come from a mix of solar, coal, nuclear, hydro and whatever else we can come up with.
